Restaurant Review: Taste of Thai

We visited the Del Mar Taste of Thai location in San Diego and looking at the menu, you see some things you recognize and then some things you don’t.  You’ve seen meekrob before but have you ever really tried it?  It’s unique.  Its crispy fried plasticky looking noodles with a sweet and sour sauce, very tasty.

We ordered the Tom Yum soup, and if you understand something about Thai soup you’ll be more comfortable with it.  Thai soup has many ingredients that are really not meant to be eaten.  They’re in there to flavor the broth but are meant to be avoided while eating.  They leave them in the bowl upon serving because they are pretty- so I take all those out actually before I start eating the soup because I tend to get kind of into it and knowing me I’ll bit down on a weird root or shrimp head or something and break my tooth. Odd twigs and sticks and stuff, all goes into the complex flavors of this smooth tropical coconut chili lime soup.

The curries are exotic and complex and include a combination of several kinds of seafood you normally don’t get to see together in one dish.  The pork with spicy peanut sauce and smooth and terrific and they have a tangy and fresh glass noodle salad: its cellophane noodles, the clear ones that I just love with a chili lime sauce and pieces of tender poached chicken.  Great food, great prices and they have a fried banana dessert with coconut ice cream that will put out the fires on your tongue.

You can always count on real Thai flavors here: you’ll get a mixture of sweet, sour, hot, spicy, bitter, and a healthy dose of fish sauce, which if you are not familiar then you are missing out.

The Del Mar location also has this cool lighting display built into the ceiling which has color changing stars and a recessed colored lighting system.  Also the décor is kind of like the inside of a genie’s lamp: purple, velvet, pointy and trimmed with gold.

I like to eat here about once a month even though the menu doesn’t really seem to change very often but it’s really nice to have a few standby dishes that I can count on to always be delicious on the rare occasion that I’m not feeling adventurous.

Taste of Thai has locations all up the southern California coast and I’m sure there’s one near you.  Visit them soon- you’ll be glad you did.
